Strengthening practical skills, local enterprise and livelihood opportunities

Communities along the Segama depend on farming, fishing, oil palm smallholdings, small businesses and other nature dependent livelihoods. Their livelihood priorities vary according to their location, knowledge, cultures and access to markets.

Forever Sabah works with community groups, cooperatives and partners to strengthen existing activities and develop new opportunities through facilitated Community Livelihoods Assessment and Product Scanning with participating community groups, village.

Community led processes

Under this effort to expand green livelihoods, village economic opportunities include native seedling production, food processing, handicrafts, cooperative development and community-based tourism planning.

Community nurseries produce native trees for riverbank restoration. This creates opportunities for local people to supply seedlings, take part in restoration work and build practical knowledge in nursery management.

Women’s groups are developing food and handicraft products using skills and materials available within their communities. Support includes product development, packaging, marketing and financial management.

Dagat has followed a particularly interesting pathway. As a fishing community near the Segama estuary, its activities centre on community based fisheries management, ice supply, renewable energy and women-led enterprise. Its solar-powered ice facility is supported by UNDP Malaysia through the Green and Resilient Recovery Local Action Grant. Lessons from Dagat are connected to the wider Segama programme through livelihood planning, community learning and the Living ICMP.

Our approach

Support includes product development, packaging, marketing and financial managament. These efforts are illustrated through various efforts such at Koperasi Mukim Segama (KOPSA), Women's Entrepreneurial groups in the villages that generates sustainable income from production of native seedlings and many others.
