The Challenges We Face

The Segama River, long a source of life and livelihood for the communities along its banks, is now facing a growing number of interconnected challenges that threaten both its ecological health and the wellbeing of those who depend on it:

• Water quality decline — Pollution stemming from land use practices and human activity along the river is compromising the water that communities and ecosystems rely on.

• Erosion and habitat loss — Riverbank erosion is reshaping the landscape, placing both natural habitats and nearby infrastructure at risk.

• Sedimentation — Increasing sediment loads are affecting water quality and disrupting the aquatic life that has sustained local ecosystems for generations.

• Diminishing fish and prawn populations — As these populations decline, the food security and traditional livelihoods of riverside communities are under strain.

• Unregulated sand mining — This activity continues to disturb the river's natural flow, further destabilizing the ecosystems that depend on it.

Taken together, these pressures point to a river system under strain — one whose health is deeply intertwined with the cultural heritage and everyday lives of the communities it has long supported.
